I have to admit that I was not always the wise roti sage I am today. Alas, I grew up in the Canadian capital, more renowned for its fried dough with cinnamon and sugar on top (Damn, I could go for that shit right now), than anything curry based. But when I moved to Toronto four years ago, I was introduced to what would certainly become my gastronomic soul mate.

The reason I go off on this tangent is because the roti spot that started this long withstanding love affair with beautiful roti was none other than Island Foods. By no means the best in the city, Island foods is kinda like that ex that you occasionally call for a little late night creep. It's always there, it's close to home and although it may not be the best you've ever had, it usually satisfies that craving when its been a while.

My go to has always been the boneless chicken roti. At $7.25 this modestly sized (yet filling) west Indian style roti is pretty spot on. The filling is somewhat runny, but still very flavourful (plus it's perfect for sopping up all the left over bits when your done). The roti itself is also good, with a more dense consistency than most outer shells. For all you vegetarians out there, I recommend the Channa roti. A flavourful blend of chick peas and potato. For the carnivore, I recommend staying away from the goat, as the meat is pretty tough. If you like the heat make sure to ask for extra hot sauce, as they can be a little tame unless you ask for a healthy dose.

And guess what? They also cater! I know what we're eating at my super sweet 16!

For your post Roti listening pleasure, Bad Boyz by Shyne with Barrington Levy. I've been thinking about this track all week for some reason. Remeber Shyne? Whoooaaahh!
